About our US Government Shutdowns news

Latest news on US Government Shutdowns, which occur when Congress and the President are unable to agree on a funding bill to keep the government running.

This can happen when the two branches of government have different priorities or are unable to compromise on certain issues. During a government shutdown, non-essential government services and operations are suspended and federal employees are either furloughed or required to work without pay. The most recent shutdowns in the US have been caused by disputes over funding for a proposed border wall between the United States and Mexico. The first occurred in January 2018 and lasted for three days, while the second, which occurred in December 2018, lasted for 35 days and became the longest government shutdown in US history. Fears for a new partial government shutdown at the end of September 2023 have been fanned by renewed partisan fighting over spending priorities.
