Latest news on Sevastopol, a city located in the southwestern part of the Crimean Peninsula on the Black Sea. The city has a population of about 340,000 people and is an important naval base for the Russian Federation, despite being based on territory internationally recognised as belonging to Ukraine. The city was founded by Greek colonists in the 6th century BC and was named after their king, Sevastopol. It has changed hands many times over the centuries, and has been controlled by the Russians since the 18th century. The city was the site of an important battle during the Crimean War in 1854, and during World War II, the Germans and Soviets fought for control of the city in a bloody conflict known as the Siege of Sevastopol. The city was finally captured by the Soviets in 1944 and remained under Soviet control until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. Since then, Sevastopol was a part of the newly-formed country of Ukraine, with a special status within the country and is still home to a large Russian naval base. Following the illegal 2014 annexation of Crimea by Russia, Sevastopol once again went under Russian control.
