About our North Korea/South Korea news

Latest on North Korea/South Korea relations, marked by conflict and tension, including breaking news and updates on summits, disputes, and military conflicts.

North Korea and South Korea were formed in the aftermath of the Second World War and the end of the Japanese occupation of the Korean Peninsula. Relations between the two states have been tense since the Korean War (1950-1953), which began when the Communist North invaded the Capitalist South.

The Korean War became one of the first major flashpoints of the Cold War, with the North Koreans gaining direct military support from the People's Republic of China and indirect support from the Soviet Union, whilst the South Koreans were supported by a Western coalition including the USA and UK.

Although a ceasefire was agreed, no formal peace treaty has ever been signed. Consequently, relations between the two Koreas have remained fractious, with the two countries sharing one of the most militarised borders in the world.
