About our El Niño news

Latest news on El Niño, the warm phase of the El Niño-La Niña climate pattern, which significantly alters global atmospheric circulation, affecting temperature, rainfall, and other weather and climate patterns.

As of June 2023, El Niño conditions have developed with the atmospheric response to the warmer-than-average tropical Pacific sea surface kicking in over the past month. The monthly Niño-3.4 index, which tracks the surface temperature of the tropical Pacific Ocean, was 0.5 °Celsius above the long-term average, indicating the presence of El Niño. This warming trend is expected to continue for the next several months based on climate model predictions and current conditions in the tropical Pacific.
