About our Antarctica news

Latest news on Antarctica, Earth’s most southerly continent. Get updates on the climate crisis affecting penguins, seabirds, ice sheets and humanity.

Antarctica is the coldest, windiest, and driest of Earth's continents, with the lowest natural air temperature ever recorded on Earth of −89.2 °C.

Over the second half of the 20th century, the Antarctic Peninsula was the fastest-warming place on Earth, raising concerns over habitat and biodiversity loss. In 2017, there were more than 4,400 scientists undertaking research in Antarctica, a number that fell to just over 1,100 in the harsh winter.
